Ron,
I just replaced my speedo cable last week - 1500 Spit with a J-type O/D, all
totally standard specification. The speedo end had a square drive, the angle
drive end of the cable had an oval drive as you describe (both the old one
that came out and the replacement). The angle drive had a square drive to the
O/D (I think).
So, unless the MGB angle drive is different to the standard Spitfire one, the
oval cable is correct. I'm afraid I never replaced the cable on the MG BGT I
once owned, so I cannot check that! Maybe you should ask the MG list...
Other than that, simply removing the angle drive and looking at the female bit
that the cable goes in to, you should be able to see the shape that the end of
the cable needs to be - probably (never looked that close myself).
