If your friends and neighbors won't think you're too weird, go crawl under
their cars and twist the driveshaft back and forth (rear wheel drive only btw).
All of them have about this much play in the rear ends, some quite a bit more.
If you didn't, the gears would grind themselves away in very short order.
This is also the play that gives the distinctive clank when you put the car
into reverse. Automatics are really good at making this reverse clank or clang.

Hey all,
What sort of repair (if any) does a spit differential require if the input
shaft can rotate 5-10 degrees without any reaction from the output shafts?
How difficult is it to do? What is considered normal free play?
TIA,
Avi
