If the starter gear is a little worn and jams on the flywheel, it will give 
these symptoms.  Put the car in fourth gear and push it forward, (handbrake 
off!) if it moves easily, this was not the problem.  If it moves about 6 
inches and then stops, push a little harder and the starter gear will pop 
free...

Just a thought ...
