A couple of months back, in an effort to fix an oil leak, I replaced the oil
pan gasket with the engine (a 1500) in place. When I re-attached the oil pan
to the block, the front center cap screw was a 'spinner'. I took it back
out and found (I believe) that it have previously been 'repaired' with a
helicoil. I think this is the case as I unthreaded what seemed like a
spring from the threads. I carefull put the bolt back in and there seemed
to be enough thread still present in the block to put a moderate amount of
torque on the cap screw... well, today it fell out and I lost much oil.
Fortunately, I was very close to home when this happened.
What would be the most effective permanent repair, preferably on that can be
done 'in place'? How difficult/risky/effective would it be to tap the hole
and put a stud in? I haven't gotten uder it to determine how much room I
have to work, that will happen tomorrow.
