Richard,
The most common solution I've heard for this is replacing the entire
exhaust system (including manifold) with stainless steel, which then
doesn't require the gasket. This is what I plan to do when I've got some
money (may as well fit a sports exhaust while I'm at it - hope the bank
manager doesn't mind!) I don't know about your car, but I'm pretty sure
the surfaces on mine aren't flat enough to get anything close to a good
seal without that gasket.
I'm just guessing here, but I don't think it would fail MOT on noise
(there's plenty of noisier cars out there!) but if it was noticed it would
probably fail because exhaust gas would get into the car through the
bulkhead (don't think there's a specific point for this on the MOT, but it
could certainly come under general car condition).
