I had this same problem once.  Piercing it with a screwdriver just tore it
up and made a mess.  So I removed the alternator,  took a hammer and a large
chisel and made a notch in the flange.  Then I put the tip of the chisel in
the notch and held it at a shallow angle so when I hit it with the hammer it
rotated off.  Worked like a charm.  Now I just don't put them on quite as
tight.
