The carb king (Paul Tegler) can probably answer this for me, but I figured
I'd shoot it to the list. And this is with regards to HIF4's from an MGB.
The Haynes manual shows the lowest tubes protruding from the carburetor
housing as being a "secondary venting tube".  I thought maybe they were
supposed to feed to the carbon canister, but soon found that petrol leaks
out of these (and will foul-up the carbon canister).
A guy at the local LBC parts place told me these are probably "fuel
over-flow" tubes. (um....okay...I'll buy that).
Aside from the smell of gasoline, this seems a bit dangerous to have
gasoline over-flowing onto my car's frame. When I capped these tubes off,
the carbs seemed to become increasingly rich (the carb is sucking air
through these?). The parts guys suggested taking hoses and feeding them to
underneath the chassy, or into a small container so it won't eat-up any
undercoating or paint.
I'm not experiencing a large drop in fuel economy (I'm getting between
25-35mpg....odometer/tripometer stopped functioning about 2 weeks ago so
it's difficult to calculate), so they're not spewing gas out at any
consistant rate even with richer than stock needles installed, but at higher
speeds I can smell gas.
My question is...what the hell are you expected to do with these tubes? feed
to carbon canister? cap-off? fuel-return?
