Original Chassis Colours?

I've been asked an odd kind of question - where the chassis of our cars
(esp. GT6's) originally painted in the body colour?

Now I thought that they weren't, but were painted either red or black, but
my red Spitfire's chassis is red and my white GT6's is actually painted
white (though I suspect this was a re-paint)

Can anyone enlighten me?
