Without choke, if it runs OK cold, but not hot, then
it's probably too rich. 
This can happen with minor air leaks (shafts, etc.).
The leaks are significant at idle when you set the
mixture, so you will then be too rich at cruise. This
because of the small air volume of the leaks comapared
to the large volume of air thru the main carb.
Look at the plugs after running hot. Are they carbon
fouled? Clean them with a small wire brush. Then lean
each carb by 1 flat at a time, testing between
adjustments. If it gets worse, then go richer 1 flat
at a time. BTW, write down each change to keep track.

Could also be the case that one carb leaks more than
the other. This makes things even more complicated.
