Marcus teh Bently reprint has tables from which you can deduce the curves, but
you most likely would just use the tables as they have the advance/retard
ranges. That would help questions 2 and 3. For question 4 it should be a retard
vacuum unit on the 76. 76 has the 9:1 compression with the flat pistons unless
it has been modified of course. You can double check by checking the
compression. Mine was in the 170 lbsft(?) range rather that the 140 lbsft for
the lower compression 7.5:1(?) (sorry don't have tthe manual at work).

Also did you check the vacuum was working. It needs the vacuum retard I was
told, mainly at idle for emissions. Then the mechanical advance takes over for
the higher engine speeds.
Timing is at 800 rpm +/1 100rpm. Need to adjust the idle if you move the
distibuter so that you keep a constant idle.

Also did you compare your distributer to the picture of mine. If it is an
advance one then you most likely need to sway it out to the correct one. Again
the manual lists the part numbers of teh different types. I suggest a small
investment.

Subject: timing - again ...

Hi,

a couple of days ago, I inquired about the correct timing for my '76 1500
(federal, but all emissions equipment removed). I received a number of replies
all saying it should be set to 2 ATDC. But after having driven the car with
this timing setting I have a number questions:

1. what would be the correct setting for a NOT-emissions controlled 1500?

2. where can I find total advance curves for the 1500? Does anyone know total
advance at say 1000 rpm, 2000 rpm, 3000 rpm, 4000 rpm?

3. does anyone know the amount of vacuum I should have for a certain amount of
spark advance?

4. What kind of distributor should I have? Currently, a single vacuum (I
believe advance) distributor is installed.

The reason I am asking is that the car ran better with my way off timing (so
much advanced, it was off the scale at 1000 rpm). If I set the timing by ear,
where is the ideal point? Is it where idle is the fastest or where it is
slowest yet stable?

Marcus
