You can get new direct replacement Spitfire catalytic converter for about
$153 from Discount Converters. "Universal" ones are about $55. Back in
1979 they were about $525!

When mine went out, the mechanic could tell by tapping on it with a wrench.
It sounded real hollow. The new one that was put on did not. Not exactly
scientific, but.... BTW -- those things can be quite expensive and not too
easy to find. My recommendation would be to leave it alone unless you fail a
smog test because of it (that's what led to me replacing mine). Enjoy the
extra gusto that a spent cat will give you until then.
