Aidan,
The only differences between the engine you have and the Mk2 are the
camshaft profile (same as Mk3 65-25 timing as opposed to 56-18 on the Herald
engine), cylinder head (Herald had lower compression and bigger inlet valves
and ports), and distributor (Herald had long vacuum advance head, spitfire
was shorter, Dizzy number stamped on side should be 7652800. If your engine
is OK, then a light filing on the engine number should allow you to re-stamp
the number, a change of camshaft and perhaps a change of head, or just a
skim, and you will have an OE spec engine.
The classified in the Sports six magazine may yield an original engine, but
it would no doubt need rebuilding. Try some of the usual suspects such as
Trading Triumphs Ltd, Quiller Triumph, TRGB, Jigsaw Racing Services,
Spitbits, Chic Doig, Wins & Co etc. You may well be able to exchange your
own engine for a recon Spit engine. Prices for these are in the region of
£500-600 depending on supplier - Kippings, Moss, Rimmers etc.
Changing the engine is probably only a days work - a good hoist or even just
a few unsuspecting friends is all that is really needed. It is easier to
take the bonnet off first though. No nasty surprises that I can think of in
changing the engine.
Best wishes
