I don't know exactly when this came into use, but I believe it was only on
some 1500 models, likely 1975 or even later (based on personal experience
with fairly original Spitfires of various vintages through 1974 models),
and perhaps only for "Federal" (US) models.

I don't remember seeing one on a Spitfire, but I have seen them on some
Herald 1200 models.
