Hi Leon,
Wow, Leon, I didn't realize you were in South Africa. There are a few people
on the Jaguar saloon list from South Africa as well.
It would be a lot of work preparing an engine for shipping to you. You might
be able to find a shipper in St. Louis or Chicago that would be going to
South Africa. I travel to those cities several times a year where I could
take the engine directly to the shippers. Maybe if people on the list tried
a little harder, we could find you a good Mark 2 engine close to you, perhaps
in New York, or Miami.
If I did sell you an engine I would want to have a machinist check everything
out first. I would not want you to go to the expense of shipping and find it
was not suitable.
I do know that I don't want to pay for having an overdrive shipped from South
Africa. Therefore, we would have to agree upon a price for the engine,
packing, etc. I also need to know which original Mk 2 engine parts you would
need for sure. You have indicated you need the intake manifold. Do you need
exhaust manifold? (It is different from the heralds, but the heralds will
fit.) The only one I have needs some repair, but used ones are available
from other sources. Do you need the water pump, generator, starter, fuel
pump, fan, carburetors? The heralds will probably be the same. Do you need
the distributor it is different (delco instead of Lucas)? You'll probably
need the clutch plate and disc, but you may want to use new ones.
I'll try to examine the engines more closely in the next couple of weeks and
let you know what kind of condition they are in. One is supposed to only
have 50,000 miles.
Until then maybe someone closer can find you something. You might even find
it would be just as economical to ship a whole car! That's probably what I
would do.
Thank you,
Bill Brockschmidt
