Actually Dan, According to the book Spitfires & GT-6's a Guide to
Originality J-type overdrives do not require a solenoid. None of the spits
I have worked on have ever had it, but that doesn't mean that some of the
early j-type overdrives might have had one just as a carry over from the
d-types.

I think you would still want to use a relay for the overdrive
solenoid -- cars with J-types installed originally have relays. FYI.
