Kirk,
My temperature guage has always run at about the 1/4 mark except in very hot
weather (by English standards!) or in traffic for a long time, and I've never
worried about it. I don't know what thermostat I'm running with, though,
because I've never bothered to look!
Remember that putting a hotter thermostat in won't necessarily make the car run
hotter. If it's running too cool to open the current thermostat, then a hotter
thermostat also won't open, and won't affect the temperature at all. In fact,
it might give you overheating problems in the summer. I'm not saying don't
change it, just make sure it really needs changing first!

I just got back from my test drive after installing my newly re-cored
radiator. They gave me the old core and boy was it plugged up! I'm going to
put pictures of it on my web site soon. I guess these things don't last 31
years! :-) They replaced the 2 rail core with a new 3 rail heavy-duty core.
I also replaced the thermostat with a 160 degree one. Well it keeps the
engine cool now! A little too cool. My temp gauge is halfway between C and
the Middle. I am going to step up to the next higher temp thermostat. I
think 190.
What thermostat are you guys running?
Bear in mind, this is a 1300cc 1968 Mk3.
BTW. I did not install an electric fan and I probably won't given the
amount of cooling this new radiator has.
