Hi All,
Well I took the Spit for it's first reide since the restoration. I still
haven't put the windshield in so I couldn't go to far or fast. My heart
sank when I heard noise from the differential area. Basically it's a
rattling noise which isn't heard on acceleration/deceleration. It isn't
a steady repetitive noise which can be associated with speed, but more
of a non-repetative rattling heard when coasting whith the clutch in. I
replaced all the U-joints while I had the body off so I don't really
suspect them yet.
I also replaced the input seal on the diff. I used the haynes manual
method for tightning the pinion drive flange nut (I didn't have a torque
wrench). I marked the nut position, and removed the nut ( also noting
the nut position as the last thread released). I replaced the nut as it
was removed, and tightened until the nut was aligned with the marks.
While this method didn't seem that accurate, I figured it was OK.
Heres the big question...could the noise I'm hearing be the result of
insufficient torque on the pinion nut?
Thanks,
Kevin Besig
