The spring does have to be removed from the differential as the spring helps
hld everything together. Two things the manual won't tell you is that the
pin sticks in the top of the differential so you have to really force it
down. We pounded on the top of the spring with a soft hammer to break it
loose. Second the differential gets stuck in the mount in the back. We
used a pry bar between the differential and the frame. It came out hard,
but it did come out. Depends on the car. Some come apart easy, some hard.
Oh another thing is that once the bolts are free you can bounce the spring
up and down by the end. This flexes the spring and that helps free it from
the diff. Hope this helps.
