Perhaps we're talking about two different applications here?
There is a grease often supplied in Girling nee Lucas rebuild kits for
packing the outer seal/dust cap and such.
And there is the grease that is used as described by the Haynes manual: to
keep the rear wheel cylinders freely sliding back in forth in their slot
to make the rear brakes work most effectively (good also to use the same
grease VERY SPARINGLY on the tips of the shoes, and in the adjustor
mechanisms).
My preference for this latter application is white lithium grease; I've a
sizeable can of "Lubriplate" that I've been nursing along for many, many
years now! :-)
