Sounds like it could be overly advanced. Once advance reaches optimum it
starts losing power until the engine is completely gutless. It would be
very hard to start a car with this timing problem.
A while back I put a different distributor in a engine and couldn't keep
it from pinging and having low power. The springs on the mechanical
advance were to weak and allowing the advance to rise to around 50 deg.
My engine was only capable of about 35 deg advance. As soon as I replaced
the springs with stiffer ones it ran great!
