You can do all of the above. It depends on your skill, available parts,
mechanical ability, MONEY, and time. If you can find the correct mainshaft
and are willing to completely dismantle your existing box to switch the
mainshaft with the OD variety, then you could use your existing box. You
would then need an overdrive unit, the "correct" adaptor that replaces the
tailshaft of your old tranny, and depending upon whether you have a three
rail, or single rail, the topcover. Finding a tranny with overdrive
already on it is far simpler and would require much less work. At any
rate, you will need the correct rear mounting plate and tranny mount for
your tranny/frame combo, shorter driveshaft (either shorten the existing
one , or the correct one for your tranny/frame), OD type shift lever and/or
knob (w/integral switch) /column switch for the overdrive (depending on
what year you fit), associated wiring, and OD speedometer cable (hopefully
the right angle adaptor is included with your OD unit or you may need one
of those as well)
