A number of years ago, I had a three-day stopover in England while on a business
trip. With some help from a British mailing list member, I was able to
visit a used Spitfire parts dealer, buy an overdrive transmission, driveshaft,
and some other applicable bits, get the whole mess cleaned off and partly
disassembled, and bring the whole mess home with me in my checked luggage. And
no extra baggage charge!
If you live in the East coast, you can fly to England pretty cheap in the off
season, probably for less that it would cost to have 50-75 pounds of stuff
shipped. And you get a free trip to England thrown in...
Getting back to the actual question, I doubt you would save much money, unless
the item was light and valuable, or you brought it yourself.
Here's an idea: Somebody should import used left-side door lock mechanisms
from England. Naturally the driver's door lock wears out 10x faster than the
passenger one, and new replacements are apparently unavailable. In exchange we
could send our good used passenger-door locks to England...
