...not true.  I had the pleasure of purchasing and owning one of the last seven 
1980
Triumph Spitfires NEW sold in the US in April of 1981. The latches were chrome
as was the window trim molding and the trim on the hardtop
...it was a California spec, car. the door handles were black, as were the 
license plate lights

In my handy dandy spitfire book by Michael Cook, all it says is that the 79
and into 80 model years carried "virtually no chrome trim at all."

I really haven't seen many '80s (or '79s) . I do seem to vaguely remember
seeing a spit once that had bonnet catches painted the same colour as the
body.
