Laura,

  Insulating your passenger compartment won't make any difference in how
hot your engine gets on the 405, 110, or 5.  Outside air is drawn in
through the radiator by the fan or rammed through as you drive.  The
majority of the surface heat will be transferred to the surrounding
air.  Keep the air moving and you more effectively cool the surface. 
The real cooling mechanism is the coolant system.  Haven't figured out
how to make a dent in that equation.  You could turn on your heater at
full boost and dump some additional heat out that way.

  To the point, insulating the cockpit will keep you cooler and your
engine won't suffer.
