For my 78 spit, which may be closest to your 79, there is no spring for the
pedal. TRF lists one, but for CA only, not required for Fed models. There ARE
two springs on the carb, one easily seen in a bracket mounted to the intake
manifold that returns the cable and the other a "wind-up" type spring (I'm
sure there's a better techical term for it) on the end of the throttle shaft.
If this breaks, it won't be visually apparent, and it may still give some
return effect, but additional springs on the pedal won't really help, since it
isn't the pedal or the cable that you really want to close, but the throttle.
You need the spring there, since the cable can pull the throttle open, but
can't push it shut again. (I hope this makes sense, I had to write it in
haste!)

cable to use, it has a solid core though, I don't know how well it will
work. I will let you know. Has anyone figured out where on the firewall
the spring attaches?
