FYI, a new fuel filter at the tank did not do the trick for me. I had to put an
additional one at the carburetor. I decided to get a glass one (clearview I
think) so I could see when I needed to clean it out. Since then I haven't
had any problems

The problemwas....
A dirty carb. The carb was rebuild only a year ago, but the float bowl
had
sludge in it. I suppose it's time to install a fuel filter. now if I can
only get the timing right...
