Ryan-
I think the engine valances are to keep the road spray off the engine,
especially the ignition side?
I have similar things on my Toyota 4x4, granted you don't 4 wheel in a spit,
but the function is the same.
BTW:
I actually saw a spit body placed on a Ford Bronco II frame. For what
purpose I don't know.
Maybe he did't like the ground clearance on his Spit!
