Are you sure you are talking about US gallons and not Imperial gallons?=
Over
the last 20 years, my '74 has always done about 21 mpg in town and 26-2=
8 mpg
on long trips.

There was a chap in the current sport six magazine who claims 50 mpg + =

his spit (with overdrive) I've managed 35-40 before!
