Clark, I think that I mis-understood the front connection on the drive shaft.
Mine is as James Carpenter described. It is a some kind of assembly covered in a
rubber sleeve. The mounting flange is free to move forward or backward
(splined?) as well as radially.

This 76 Spitfire has an overdrive and that may be where this type of drive shaft
is used.
