Nick,
It sounds like the pressure plate is "Kaput", you might also want to
think
about replacing the clutch disk and throwout bearing while your doing the
repairs. This will save you alot of headaches later on. If you continue to
drive the car with it acting like this you could be in for a major overhaul
on your transmission.
