Vic -
I don't think it's any kind of moisture absorption material! Does your vacuum
advance work? Suck on the port - you should feel resistance. If not, then the
brown stuff may be what's left of your diaphragm. If the diaphragm is intact
then it could be an accumulation of gas vapors that have turned to varnish
crystals in the vacuum chamber.

I sent this request to the Spitfire list and got no takers on the
response. Anyone care to jump in? Please respond direct or to the
Spitfire list (I dropped the Triumph list).
Thanks

I have succumbed to a minor case of shipwrights disease. I was cleaning
up the distributor and removed the dashpot. While cleaning it, brown
granular powder came out of the vacuum opening. Tapping it seemed to
dislodge more of the powder. I'm guessing that this is some kind if
moisture absorption material. Anyone care to jump in on this one and
shed some light?
