| Dito that problem, I can't see any harm in tapping the lens, mine just
takes a small flick to get it working.  I have never expericenced it
stopping whist the engins going.  I took mine apart recently, and riged
up a test circut to test the calibration.  It's all solid state
electronics, the only thing I could think of would be a sticking
needel.  
When you have low revs a very small magnetic force is used to rotate the
needel, when you rev the car this puts a much bigger force on it that is
enough to move the needel.  Tapping is just enough to overcome the
stiction.
