Chris,

It sounds like your new solenoid may be defective.  The
white/red wire provides 12V to energize the solenoid
when in the "start" position.  This much sounds OK.
The white/yellow wire is the supply to the coil.  This wire
*should* get 12V from the solenoid only when cranking the
engine.  This is the unballasted mode.  When the key is
in the "run" position this wire will have ~6V on it, but
not supplied from the solenoid, it comes from the ballasted
supply elsewhere.  This 6V is what energized the solenoid
and caused your starter to run continuously when you switched
the wires.

You could measure the voltage on the white/yellow wire with
the key in "run" and while cranking, but I think you have
essentially duplicated this step when hooking up the solenoid
the first time.  It sounds like your white/yellow wire is 
not getting any voltage while cranking the engine.
