One thing you should check when you have the shift extension off is a
rubber bushing that is located on the opposite side of the shaft from where
the shift lever is attached. I found when I had mine apart, the bushing
was a big blob of goo. Without this bushing you will have a tremendous
amount of slop when shifting. I didn't see this part offered by the big 3
so I made one out of a bit of fuel hose, you know those bits of hose they
include with inline fuel filters that no one ever uses. Works great, nice
tight and crisp shifts.
