[Shotimes] Another Stupid Question

Are all Gen I and II engines dirty runners?
My tail pipes are black, while most other cars I see
in parking lots have a greyish color. Is this normal
for these V6 engines? Or is there any tweaks that can
be done to lean them out a bit?
