Why not use a digital multi-meter in Volts DC mode?

you can get a decent one for under $40.


I keep one of these in all my road-side tool rolls:  Klein Tools MM325
Multimeter

Currently can be found for $35 on a.co

Just have a helper try to start the car with the DMM set to 20 VDC and
watch the numbers on the LCD screen.

under 12 is not good, under 10 is bad.
