Also late to the party, but when I was in the Navy we
made extensive use of NEVR-DULL "magic wadding polish".

Just wipe it on the brightwork, let it dry and turn
into a hazy residue for a few minutes, and then wipe
it off with an old t-shirt. Do this until you can
surreptitiously paint over as much of the brightwork
as you think you can get away with.  ;-)

One word of caution; Nevr-Dull is extremely flammable.
