If it's not Karl's suggestion (you're not pushing the right lever),
it's more likely that it's the interlock that detects the tranny is in
park. Or the lock is broken. That's pretty common. At least it's
broken in the easy to fix way (there's a button that you push when the
key is in the run position (or maybe start, it's been ages since I've
done one.) to pull the lock).
