Was going to stay out of this based on the replies,
but with your clarification, I will say that you
are on the right path!
Sounds a lot like what I just went through.
Exactly the same symptoms. Repair guy comes out,
looks at it, and tells me that the "transmission"
(guess that's what it's called in MaytagSpeak)
is bad. BUT -- I had a 5 year warranty on that,
so it'd be covered under warranty. What WOULDN'T
be covered under warranty would be a few "ancillary"
parts and labor. Could be repaired to the tune
of ~$400!!!!
Yikes!! Went out and bought a brand new washer.
Upside was that the new one is a front loader --
very water and energy efficient.
Downside was that the missus now had a "mismatched"
set of washer and dryer -- found myself at the store
a couple weeks later buying the matching dryer....
