Flamability is the first issue. Things like mineral spirits, and
especially things like lacquer thinner are very explosive, and highly
volatile. Depending on who's parts cleaner you've purchased, they are
quite capable of sparking and igniting the fumes, with generally
catastrophic results. There is also the matter of the materials used to
make the pump unit. Some will dissolve quite readily in various
solvents.
I would personally recommend first looking at the types of cleaners
listed in the unit's literature as recommended or compatible. From that
I would make a determination.
What works well in an old glass pickle jar doesn't necessarily work
well in a motorized parts washer.

I just got a new parts washer and wondered what the current ideas are
for
solvent. I am considering paint thinner (deodorized mineral spirits),
Simple Green, the purple Permatex stuff, or some stuff called Crud
Cutter I
saw at Lowes in 5 gallon jugs.
