When I was doing a lot of chainsaw work in the USFS, I learned
a couple ways to start saws without throttle locks. The safe way
is to put the saw on the ground and stick the toe of your right boot
into the back handle loop. Kneel on your left knee and hold
the saw down with your left hand on the front handle and pull
with the right hand. You then use your foot to both hold
down the saw and to operate the throttle, by leaning your leg.
This way you can open the throttle more than the throttle lock
which is useful when the engine's flooded.
The unsafe way is to stand upright, hold the saw in your right hand on
the throttle and start it with the left. I do this often with
a warm saw but I don't recommend it unless you really know what you are
doing and are wearing saw chaps because if you do it wrong the saw
lands on your legs.
