I agree with the "swamp cooler" suggestion. I once lived in Tucson and had one 
mounted in a "heat chimney" in the middle of the house. Kept everything 
comfortable and cost very little to operate.

Heat should be easy, probably a basic "through the wall" unit would suffice.

It appears that my 30 year old, high - maintenance combination A/C furnace
has finally taken a dump...every year since I've been in this house ('94)
I've been patching it up and running it.  Now I think it's time to bite the
bullet and get a new one.

This thing lives on the roof.  I, in turn, live in the high mojave desert
area of Ca-near Death valley...  meaning extreme summer temps, (cold temps
never so bad...)

Any recommendations or ideas for a good, efficient unit?  My house is about
1500sq ft

Any help/tips etc would be highly appreciated.  I'm very leery of the local
contractors...the more homework I do on my own the better.
