Having gone this route 2 years ago, here is what I learned/believe:
I ended up with a 97 Dodge DRW 3500 w/ Cummins diesel.
1. Concur on weak Dodge autos - but then the 5 speed (like I have) suffer from
5th gear coming loose! I believe the reengineered the nut preventing this - not
sure when that was done.
2. Powerstrokes are well thought of - but I believe they had some problems
with the early 6 speeds. Fords autos seem to hold up well.
3. Unless storage space is a problem, forget the 28' tag and go straight to
the gooseneck or fifth wheel. Probably come out better picking up a fully
equipped race trailer from someone upgrading or getting out of the game than
building it up yourself.
Just MHO.
