I asked my welding instructor about that. Apparently, the welder makes enough
light to activate it, and the helmet reacts fast enough to be safe with that
power source.

I prefer the battery operated one. I do a lot of welding in my shop and
there isn't a lot of light there sometimes. I don't know how much light
they take to operate.
