Accordian Shades

Anybody have experience with repairing the pull cords 
on Hunter-Douglas Accordion Window Shades?
These are "Duets" and apparently, the cords 
(when they break) must be fused back together again. 
 How is this done?  Can it be done by the common
layman?  

Any ideas?
