If you really are using a 12 volt starter with a 139 tooth (6 volt) ring =
gear I=E2=80=99m surprised you get a year=E2=80=99s worth of use before =
failure.
=20
I=E2=80=99ve been using the stock 6 volt starter and stomp switch on my =
=E2=80=9952 GMC (Chevy used the same part number starter in =E2=80=9952) =
with a 12 volt battery (and alternator, lights, radio, wipers, etc) for =
11+ years. Works great. Engine starts in just a turn or two after =
sitting in the garage for a week or two. Only caveat I would have is to =
not crank the engine for long periods because the 6 volt starter would =
get really hot.
=20
And, you can=E2=80=99t =E2=80=9Cfix=E2=80=9D this problem by putting a 6 =
volt Bendix on a 12 volt starter. The shaft size is difference.

Hey guys, I have a 50 model 3600 with a later model 235. Over the years =
I have gone through many starters, and just kept replacing them every =
year or less. I have now been told that the starters that I have been =
using are 12-volt and the ring grear will not match up to the flywheel, =
so I need a 6-volt starter to match the teeth. I am told that the =
wiring for a 6-volt starter will work with my 12-volt system. Any =
thouights?
=20
Thanks!
