When you talk about tapping on the starter, where is it you're tapping? My guess would be that the plunger in the solenoid is hanging up, causing the starter to do nothing. Tapping on it will jar it loose for the moment, but when it goes back to its home, it sits down in that wear spot again. A new soleniod is a hell of a lot cheaper than a high torque starter.
