I've heard that a lot of the roads back then were not paved like today
and a they got really muddy when it rained, so you would pull over and
slide out on the passenger's side on to the grass or sidewalk so you
don't get your boots muddy. Also another one was while the gentleman got
out on his side, his lady friend would lean over and lock his side while
he was walking around the truck to open her door up to let her out.
