Thank you for all of the feedback. Everyone agrees the Chevy has a
Generator. I'll dive back into that to get a firmer understanding of
what's possible however in the meantime I would like to try to get the
@^$#@~ charging system functioning again <g>
I just grabbed a few more pics if they will help. I'm told ( I'm not
certain if some or Any of the responses go to the list: If not I hope
those who are helping won't mind if I recap it on list so someone else
Googling for an answer can perhaps use the info ? ) the starter is
original and the voltage regulator is as well: from the 6 Volt Pos
ground days. ( 1953 3/4 tons WERE Positive ground, weren't they? ). I'm
also informed the gauges could well be unmodified. There is no question
the truck runs on 12 volt, neg ground. But that's for another day..
One of the two leads to the ammeter goes to the headlight switch. Photo
is here: The red wire from the left goes to the ammeter.

This is the generator if this helps diagnose the problem:

And this is the wiring at the back of the ammeter in the instrument
cluster: the Green wire is the one which is no longer connected to anything:

Again I'm only guessing that this is the reason my system runs the
battery down: prior to removing the haphazardly patched birds nest of
wiring under the dash the truck charged just fine and the ammeter
functioned.
Where might the green wire belong? Connected to the starter switch?

There is a stub of a green wire there, tho all wires are connected to
the same post.
Side note: could I do any damage with a patch wire and alligator clips
just connecting the green wire from the ammeter to likely candidates?
Any thoughts on what I should avoid connecting to, so as to minimize the
chance of destroying something electrical which still functions?
