Dave here, with Dusty's '50 GMC. It's been hot here in So Cal lately, and
his truck is running at the top of the temp gauge, and puking coolant
whenever he shuts it off, and even in traffic sometimes. I flushed the
system, replaced the hoses, thermostat, coolant, and cap. No change. Then we
noticed the overflow tube from which the coolant spews comes off the top of
the header tank - but is not controlled by the spring under the cap. In
fact, it is open to atmosphere. This is not a pressurized system! The cap is
doing nothing more than keeping birds from falling in. It does not seat
against a flange to allow water expansion to open it. There is no internal
flange in the neck.
Is this the stock radiator from 1950? Are they supposed to run open,
unpressurized systems? Seems a pressurized system would run cooler and not
boil over nearly as easily. Should I have this radiator modified to be
pressurized to, say, 7 lbs? Or buy a new one that fits?
Any ideas?
